Mirror Year addresses creating within the parameters of caregiving. The images printed on fabric are captured from my child’s bedroom mirror at sunrise. Initially intended as painting references, I found myself revisiting them as nearly finished photographs.
Simultaneously, my structure of painting for long portions of the day was traded for short bursts of focused sewing time with durable materials (muslin, linen, cotton and silk chiffon) that were suited for both toddler play and a final work. I relied on my previous painting language to make decisions about where to chop, what to stitch, and how to stretch. The results are somewhat quilt-like, with moments of opacity, transparency and areas of reinforced sewing.
All made while ruminating on thoughts of tension, exploration within limitation, incisions and new forms.
